This dark romance follows outlaw prince of Basel and the king of Dresden who were childhood friends.

One day, Prince Reedric is summoned by the new king of Dresden, igniting a fire which set a new path in motion for both men. Their love eludes them as unforeseen circumstances forces Reedric, who is riddled with scars inside and out, to face the ultimate abuser of his past while at the same time accepting and cultivating powers he has refused to embrace.

Two lovers, one a prince and the other a king, seek to find each other while overcoming a formidable foe in Richard’s manic father for the crown which his father has stolen.

Will love prevail? Or, will the past shape the future into its own image?

This story will leave you feeling raw emotions. You will be taken on a journey of a love that surpasses time and boundaries.

I liked the overall idea of this story, and the love between Reedric and Richard, but I wanted more world-building and more information about the magic or powers. (Did just Reedric's family have them and not others? How do they work? Are they different for everyone?) I wanted more of the history, too. A number of events are mentioned briefly but I didn't understand what happened, like Richard's mother being killed and Reedric being there because he had somehow chosen her over his own mother for something. King Irwin said he had intended for Reedric's mother to die. What? If he hated Reedric's mother, why were Reedric and his uncle in his court, and why did Reedric's uncle stand by while Reedric was abused there? I had many questions and I found the dream sequences and body shifting a little confusing. Again, I really liked the overall idea, but found the execution hard to understand.

As far as Content Warnings go, there is not a lot of graphic sex, but there is definitely a lot of violence and pain.

The narration was pretty good. There was good pacing, and the characters' emotions were well expressed.

I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

While listening to this I was on the edge of my seat. It flowed well and was full of suspense. The characters have strong emotions that later on you realize where it comes from.
S.L. Vaden shows through this story that we all have trauma. And it can be hard to deal with and ask for help.
I think the author wanted characters that showed imperfection, humanity. So the reader could relate on a deeper level.

explicit. Storyline was interesting. but a disclaimer is necessary. There are explicit sexual acts in this, so it may not be for all. The Narrator did a good job, and the clarity was excellent.

Okay, but explicite.
