Featured Article: Listen Like the World Is Ending with These Apocalyptic Audiobooks

Apocalyptic audiobooks all have one big thing in common: each is set in a world that is ending or just on the brink of collapse. Outside of that, apocalyptic and postapocalyptic stories take on all sorts of topics, twisting and turning into so many different genres and directions. Whether you love sci-fi adventures or prefer character-driven stories that reflect on real-world issues, this collection of listens has something for everyone.

I have been an avid listener of the Jane Yellow Rock series, but after listening to this combination of supernatural crimefighters, I have bought the C.E. Murphy series, too, and I am looking forward to getting to know JoAnne better. Thanks, Faith Hunter and C.E. Murphy, for doing this combination story. And the narrators did a great job of bringing the characters together. The only reason I subtracted a star is for the audio, which was bad. Khristine Hvam was much louder than Gabra Zackman, and it made for difficult listening, as one was always either too quiet or too loud.

What an awesome combination!

Only being familiar with Jane Yellowrock, it seemed to me that this was Joan Walker’s character joining Jane Yellowrock in meeting a host of alternate characters from Jane’s world in a parallel New Orleans. Hence, it seems less of a crossover and more of a Jane Yellowrock novella with a guest appearance by Joan. The novella gives some spoilers about what happened to the characters in Jane’s world, so it’s best if you’ve listened to books 1-6 before digging in here.

I actually preferred this novella to the full length Yellowrock books. There’s more fun. The introduction of shaman Joan, and Lazarus the mysterious, provided fresh and interesting new characters/magics. Best of all: there was only one brief touching upon a woman being abused by her vampire owner, so yay for minimal misogyny.

The best of both worlds- I think

The narration was good but the volumes were so different between the narrators it was distracting.

Great read

I hope the battle of whose name goes first as author and who is the first name for the narrator isn't the end of a nice date. can't quite imagine the ego battles. unless my belief that both authors are one and the same. if not, keep colaborating, I'll buy.

Really hard typing in reviews on a cell phone. both authors keep the story line rolling with a solid plot and characters' development. both the literary references and the connection to our world's lingo and events make it a joyful read. or listen as the case may be.

what a hoot

As a huge Jane Yellowrock fan, I have read every book I could get my hands on. This one was a fast furious ride thru an alternate universe for both characters. Definitely going to explore more books from C.E. Murphy.

Too much fun
