Caleb E. Campbell
Pastor Caleb Campbell has watched as Christian nationalism has taken over large swaths of the United States. And he's suffered the relational fallout of standing against it, both in his community and his church. While it's possible to be both a Christian and hold Christian nationalist ideas, Christian nationalism itself is an un-Christian worldview, rooted in ideas about power, race, and property that are irreconcilable with Christian faith. Campbell has come to see himself as a missionary to Christian nationalists, reaching out to them with the love and freedom of Jesus Christ.
In Disarming Leviathan, Campbell equips Christians to minister to their Christian nationalist neighbors. He introduces the basics of Christian nationalism and explores the reasons so many people are attracted to it. He also addresses a variety of American Christian nationalist talking points and offers questions and responses that humbly subvert these claims and cultivate deeper, heart-level conversations.
Christian nationalism is an established feature of the American landscape. Disarming Leviathan can help prepare us to confront it with compassion and hospitality, and with the truth of the good news of Jesus.

This book has been extremely helpful in helping me choose when to speak up and to look for ways to be neutral and consistent while also making sure my parents feel heard and understood. It helped me articulate a lot of the specific concerns I’ve been feeling, and also helped me separate the compounding emotional distress from childhood conflicts (which we are still talking through and my parents are surprisingly very receptive to) from the particular political disagreements that conflict with my conscience while pressing on experiential wounds. This book is very helpful in reorienting yourself from an oppositional stance to one that seeks to reconcile and unite towards a shared goal of properly understanding and carrying out Christ’s calling without conflating it with of subjecting it to the authority of political parties. The hope and intended outcome is to maintain Christ— and not an inherited or weaponized interpretation of Christ—as the primary goal and guiding light. I can’t promise or attest to political conversions or anything like that, as that isn’t the goal, but I can say that it has been much more manageable to think clearly and act carefully when talking with my parents, to be honest without being combative and to take the time to clarify and reconcile the tiny little things that work to make up the big things. I am so grateful to have this as a resource.
A grounding and practical necessity
