Pastor Caleb Campbell has watched as Christian nationalism has taken over large swaths of the United States. And he's suffered the relational fallout of standing against it, both in his community and his church. While it's possible to be both a Christian and hold Christian nationalist ideas, Christian nationalism itself is an un-Christian worldview, rooted in ideas about power, race, and property that are irreconcilable with Christian faith. Campbell has come to see himself as a missionary to Christian nationalists, reaching out to them with the love and freedom of Jesus Christ.

In Disarming Leviathan, Campbell equips Christians to minister to their Christian nationalist neighbors. He introduces the basics of Christian nationalism and explores the reasons so many people are attracted to it. He also addresses a variety of American Christian nationalist talking points and offers questions and responses that humbly subvert these claims and cultivate deeper, heart-level conversations.

Christian nationalism is an established feature of the American landscape. Disarming Leviathan can help prepare us to confront it with compassion and hospitality, and with the truth of the good news of Jesus.

So thankful to have a pastor willing to learn all he can on this subject & teach others. I have watched family members & church members fall prey to Christian nationalism & it’s so hard to put it all into words or know how to handle it. Great resource that I will use time & again & pass onto others.

So informative!

I always prefer audiobooks narrated by the author. I truly felt it made me fully grasp his compassionate tone. And this book made me more hopeful and empowered than I have felt for a long time

Compassionate and Practical

This book encourages the follower of Christ to not be taken captive by any hollow or deceptive philosophy (Col 2:8), or any power in this world which lays claim to our ultimate allegiance over Christ. This book encourages us to extend the love of Christ to all people, even to brothers and sisters in Christ that may hold to a different understanding of what it means to live as a believer in this world.

Praying that God mightily uses this book to encourage the hearts of His people and to exalt His name above every other name!

Thank you for writing it! I praise God for using you to shine a light in the darkness!

A Must Read

This book has been such a relief and help to me in the present time. A friend recommended this to me when I was telling her about my struggles to maintain an honest and productive relationship with my parents when we couldn’t seem to avoid politics or have a productive conversation when it inevitably came up. I felt morally compelled to counter and confront my parents but also felt like I was always tempted by the desire to be right and couldn’t navigate the conversations with the compassion and nuance that Christ models for us.

This book has been extremely helpful in helping me choose when to speak up and to look for ways to be neutral and consistent while also making sure my parents feel heard and understood. It helped me articulate a lot of the specific concerns I’ve been feeling, and also helped me separate the compounding emotional distress from childhood conflicts (which we are still talking through and my parents are surprisingly very receptive to) from the particular political disagreements that conflict with my conscience while pressing on experiential wounds. This book is very helpful in reorienting yourself from an oppositional stance to one that seeks to reconcile and unite towards a shared goal of properly understanding and carrying out Christ’s calling without conflating it with of subjecting it to the authority of political parties. The hope and intended outcome is to maintain Christ— and not an inherited or weaponized interpretation of Christ—as the primary goal and guiding light. I can’t promise or attest to political conversions or anything like that, as that isn’t the goal, but I can say that it has been much more manageable to think clearly and act carefully when talking with my parents, to be honest without being combative and to take the time to clarify and reconcile the tiny little things that work to make up the big things. I am so grateful to have this as a resource.

A grounding and practical necessity

I so struggle with resentment towards the good people who have adopted the rhetoric and convictions of those twisting scripture to support their persona & leader’s religious goals which are not consistent or compatible with the teachings of Christ. Learning to respond like Jesus in our political world seems impossible… this book provides useful advice
