Charlotte Finn never wanted to inherit the family's produce farm - much less plow a heap of money into it. Her plan is to hammer a great big FOR SALE sign into the farm's fallow furrows, but her sunny hopes of a quick sale succumb to a killing frost when she finds a dead body entwined supine in the tomato vines. The poor man, it seems, was run through...with a pitchfork?

Now, Charlotte is stuck running the farm in the midst of a murder investigation. Her knowledge of farming is smaller than her bank balance, so she relies on caretakers Joe and Alice Wong and their farmhands. But can she trust them? She doesn't know them. There's also farmer Samuel Brown, who still carries a childhood grudge. But the case gets personal when Charlotte learns that the victim might have been her own kin—and seeds of suspicion grow into a fertile field of suspects.

Charlotte turns to the farm's pig to help root out the killer. Soon, the goats, geese, and horse join in, but will Charlotte harvest a murderer - or buy the farm?

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery and the narrator. If you are a fan of Susan Wittig Albert’s Beatrix Potter mysteries then you will love this book. I’m very much looking forward to the next book in the series!

Charming cozy nod to a childhood classic.

Dead on the Vine is a slightly uneven light-hearted cozy mystery with an entertaining storyline and a large pool of suspects. Charlotte, a feisty city girl, inherits her late Uncle's farm. Joined by best friends Diane and Beau they arrive with plans to stage the premises For Sale. Slight complications from sabotoge are ramped up when a dead body is discovered in the fields.
Should she suspect the likable farmhands who served her Uncle. Or the
more threatening members of the neighboring Avery clan who have unproven claims of their own?
If you enjoy whimsical anthropomorphic farm animals... a ladybug named Mrs. Robinson, an intelligent pig named Horse and a soccer playing horse named Pele will incentivize you to give this new series a try.

Dead on the Vine is ridiculous. I tried to force myself to finish the book but could not. The author tried to make it too cute. I know pigs are smart animals, but I don't think they have reached the level in which they can communicate with humans. Also, the ladybug was insulting. I should have stopped then but I continued. Finally, after chapter 12, I just couldn't force myself to finish this book. Susan Boyce doesn't help. This are young characters and they sound as if they are in their 50s. Susan was perfect for the prickly housekeeper Alice, who was about 50.
