Isabella Barrett sees ghosts. But the dead aren't the only ones watching her.

Left penniless and alone after her father's sudden death, Isabella accepts a position at Harrowgate Manor, an isolated estate shrouded in secrets and sorrow. Whispers stalk the halls. Icy fingers graze her skin. And shadowed figures watch her from the dark. The spirits want something from her—and their intentions are growing darker.

Her new employer, the enigmatic Rhys Caradoc, is a man forged of silence and secrets. He claims to need her help cataloguing his rare book collection, but Isabella soon realizes he knows far more about her gift—and her past—than he should.

As the line between the living and the dead begins to blur, and Harrowgate's buried horrors claw their way to the surface, Isabella must decide if Rhys is her protector… or something far more dangerous.

For those who crave haunted manors, brooding heroes, slow-burn desire, and chilling ghostly mysteries, this standalone historical gothic romance will leave you breathless.

This is a Victorian gothic romance set in gas-lamp England, featuring a haunted heroine, a mysterious and morally complex hero, forbidden books, ghosts, and an isolated manor. Tropes include: gothic mystery, slow burn, forced proximity, haunted house, dangerous attraction, and heroine-with-a-secret gift. Sensual, atmospheric, and darkly romantic. Standalone in the Revenant Roses series.

Darkest at Dusk is a well-written dark and gripping Gothic romance. Isabelle sees ghosts. It’s a gift she tries to keep hidden to keep herself from being deemed mad. When her father dies, she accepts employment to catalogue the library of Rhys Caradoc, a reclusive man who has shown interest in her father’s research. These two have more in common than the know. The manor is steeped in mystery and horror. Will Isabelle’s gift be strong enough to end the terror and bring peace to Rhys and his household? The setting is chilling and the characters strong and appealing. The “villain” is not someone you ever want to meet. Carmen Rose and Tim Campbell did a fantastic job bringing the story to life.

I generally love this writers stories. The story dragged and didn’t keep my attention. I would not recommend.
