This program is read by the author.

Laurie Gelman’s clever debut about a year in the life of a kindergarten class mom—a brilliant send-up of the petty and surprisingly cutthroat terrain of parent politics.

Jen Dixon is not your typical Kansas City kindergarten class mom—or mom in general. Jen already has two college-age daughters by two different (probably) musicians, and it’s her second time around the class mom block with five-year-old Max—this time with a husband and father by her side. Though her best friend and PTA President sees her as the “wisest” candidate for the job (or oldest), not all of the other parents agree.

From recording parents’ response times to her emails about helping in the classroom, to requesting contributions of “special” brownies for curriculum night, not all of Jen’s methods win approval from the other moms. Throw in an old flame from Jen’s past, a hyper-sensitive “allergy mom,” a surprisingly sexy kindergarten teacher, and an impossible-to-please Real Housewife-wannabe, causing problems at every turn, and the job really becomes much more than she signed up for.

Relatable, irreverent, and hilarious in the spirit of Maria Semple this is a fresh, welcome voice in fiction—the kind of audiobook that real moms clamor for, and a vicarious listen for all mothers, who will be laughing as they are liberated by Gelman’s acerbic truths.

Critic reviews

"[L]isteners will enjoy the story, which feels as if their favorite mom friend is regaling them with tales from her own life of mom uniforms and substitute words that are safe for kid ears. Gelman's voice is energizing, and her cadence confiding in this debut novel." -AudioFile

At first I found this book kind of annoying, and I was put off by an author narrating her own novel but then the whole thing grew on me! Really fun, wild ride of a read. Would highly recommend.

Fun read - stay with it!

Where does Class Mom rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of my favorite audio books. It's easy to follow while also following the road as I drive and kept me constantly entertained.

What did you like best about this story?

I really, really enjoyed this book. My class mom days are behind me, my youngest is in high school, but I really enjoyed this look back. I thought certain lines were laugh our loud funny and the characters were certainly relate-able for any suburban soccer mom. I was sad when it was over and also that Gelman doesn't have any other books for me to listen to.

What does Laurie Gelman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I thought Gelman was a great narrator. She sounds just like a lot of my friends. In fact, i would BE her friend. This is one book in which the author reading it was a positive rather than a negative. She really gave a voice to Jen- her main character.

Loved this book AND the narrator

The writing is nothing amazing, but the story was fun and intriguing enough to hold my attention. Looking forward to the next book.

Great presentation & an even better story line. I'm so mad that it ended. I want more.

Unfortunately I don’t think this book is for me. I just can’t get behind the story. The performance is good but I find the story choppy and uninteresting. I’m going to try another Laurie Gelman book and see how that goes. I really want to like her writing.

Not for me
