China White-Black Death is an origin story. When Officer Kate Dawson loses everything in a tragic and senseless act of violence, the burn-out, desolate person—the mere shell of a woman—must struggle to fight the demons of her past and learn how to live again…

Officer Dawson was once an up-and-coming star of the San Francisco Police Department, the top of her class at the Academy. All of her instructors believed that she had the makings of a first class, police officer. But then, her estranged husband Michael came home from the war, suffering with PTSD, and turned her world upside down. Stripped of her rank and title, temporarily confined to a psychiatric clinic, Kate was demoted and purposely buried in Records by a Board of Inquiry. Now, her one chance at redemption comes as a new threat emerges in the City by the Bay. China White (also known as Fentanyl) has been killing young adults in record numbers (as many as 300 deaths per day), and it appears a major power-broker in Silicon Valley may be behind the sale. Can Dawson stop him before he kills again with the deadly opioid?

This is the prequel novel to the very successful Kate Dawson Thrillers.

The audiobook for China White--Black Death may well be one of the best audiobooks I have heard this year! The narration by Kristina Fuller Yuen is simply outstanding.  Not only does she tell the story in a suspenseful way but she also changes voices to match each of the various characters.  Each voice change is a work of art, owing to a real superstar who is emerging in the field as a narrator and producer of great audiobooks.  I've only heard one other great audiobook which did this, and it clearly adds a dimension to the story I had never experienced before.  I will be looking for other audiobooks produced by Ms. Yuen.  The story itself functions as a prequel to author John L. Flynn's Mystery-Thrillers, introducing us to his female hero Kate Dawson and revealing how she turned personal tragedy into a career in law enforcement as a top homicide detective.  The story, set in 2009 which is fifteen years earlier than the other Kate Dawson thrillers, focuses on a criminal mastermind who intends to flood the drug market with China White, the original name for Fentanyl, and trigger an Opioid crisis. When Dawson is blamed for the tragedy and demoted to Records as punishment, she stumbles upon a piece of evidence which doesn't seem to fit and she launches her own investigation. The cat-and-mouse game she plays with the criminal mastermind showcases her superior work as a  criminologist.  You'll really enjoy this audiobook if you like detective thrillers which keep you on the edge.

One of my favorite Audiobooks!
