A debut high-stakes fantasy romance trilogy set against a once-in-a-generation duel to the death between rival witches and dragon riders as they battle to control the source of all magic in their kingdoms. Perfect for fans of Fourth Wing, Throne of Glass, and Quicksilver.

You duel or you die.

Astrid has always known she is destined to die. She is the last Nachstern witch and heir to the Queendom of Arturea, cursed by a centuries-old covenant to duel the heir to the Kingdom of Vatra for the source of all magic: the Heart. And now Astrid’s time is up. She is heading into enemy territory to face Prince Zryan, the most powerful dragon rider in eons, with only her familiar, her potions and her wits to aid her. She is going to die, and any chance her queendom has of curing the Blight that’s ravaging the lands and killing her people will die with her.

Meanwhile, deep in dragon country, Skylar and her travelling troupe arrive in Vatra's capital, ready to profit off the legions of spectators swarming to the city ahead of the duel. She despises the royals and all they stand for, especially as the King’s guard murdered her mother. But when her best friend disappears, suspected to have been taken in the conscription, her search takes her closer to the royals than she ever could have imagined.

As the duel looms over the kingdom, Skylar and Astrid’s fates intertwine. They must battle a growing rebellion, their inner demons, and ultimately, those they love most, to determine if together they will save—or doom—their world.

I really enjoyed this story!
It has elements of House of Dragon/Game of thrones, Hunger Games, and Quicksilver. So if these are the type of Action/Adventure Epic Fantasies you are into, then this will be a fun read!
This is the start of a new series so you will be thrown a lot of new information on how the world works. Dual perspectives of the 2 main FMCs. Astrid is definitely my favorite character and in the Audio book, her chapters are voiced by the amazing Nina Ydis!
It took me almost until the end of the book for me to start liking Skyler though, so reading through her Chapters did not really interest me until about midway through the story.
Dragon Riders and Witches have been fighting for centuries on who keeps the power of how Magic is used. The Dragon riders was giving a lot of House of Dragon vibes but also the humans have their own source of magic! Which makes it more interesting to me. I love the Witches and their Familiars a lot! There bonds and connections with their Familiars are beautiful and made me want to know more about the Continent that the Witches are from.
There is Romance that happens with one of the FMC's with a MMC that I absolutely love and adore. Their moments together actually made me cry. Its a very mildly spicey book, with it only having 1 intimate scene. I wish there was more moments between them and I hope we get to see the MMC's perspective in the upcoming book!
The last 10 chapters went very fast because of all the twists, reveals and action. I wish the second book was out because I am ready to dive into it right now!

Nina Yndis is my queen!

Just when you thought there couldn’t be anymore twists, boom! They hit you with another curveball. Amazing book, so far it’s up there in my top reads of 2026. I need the sequel ASAP.

What I liked

* Dual POV done right—Astrid had me immediately, but watching Skylar grow on me?? worth it
* The familiar bonds?? I ate that up. Emotional, powerful, and honestly some of my favorite moments
* Animal familiars = instant obsession.
* High stakes that actually feel high
* The character relationships kept me guessing… like wait, who is ending up with WHO??

What I didn’t like

* It leans very YA in tone for most of the book, which might throw some readers off going in.
For me I like a book that really said sub plot romance like 🌶️

The duel pov

Love the twist at the end! It’s not the average fantasy romance, worth the read!

Surprisingly good!
