As a descendant of the Chinese god of medicine, Elle was destined to be a doctor. Instead, she’s underemployed as a magical calligrapher at the fairy temp agency. She and her older brother are in hiding from their younger brother, who seeks their deaths to gain their god’s favor. Safety means an order of invisibility with a side of no attachments at the No Fun Allowed store. Elle only relaxes around her client Luc, to whom she’s gotten attached. Oops.

Half-elf Luc, the agency's top security expert, is chained to his job. Retaining his free-will involves unrelenting excellence, overtime, and no relationships, especially not with an overqualified calligrapher connected to his latest investigation.

When her skills accidentally save his life, he brings her a gift and a commission that should catapult her into fame. Double oops.

Elle will do one job, in secret, then cut him off. Except she hasn’t counted on their chemistry, which blooms into a relationship complete with bad puns, dick jokes, and long…nights. Happiness, for once, is an option. But Elle is loyal to her family above all, and Luc, soul-bound to the agency, can never leave.

When Elle's younger brother attacks, she must choose: flee, losing Luc but saving her big brother, or fight, risking it all for her happily ever after.

Definitely a slow beginning but it was good to get the lay of the land and appreciate the characters and where they were all coming from. I think the author did a great job of making us fall in love with everyone, such good little details here and there to make everything come together. I loved the ending. And I appreciate that it was a well-rounded stand-alone novel instead of a giant 6 part series, sometimes you just want to have a good read and let it be resolved at the end. Loved it!!

So, so lovely and excellent characters

I have been DNFing fantasy books left and right (in the dozens). I finally found an enjoyable cozy-ish fantasy book. It has interesting but not crazy, over-the-top world-building/magic system. I typically do not go for romantasy but loved this one! I almost did not start listening because of the non-fantasy title and cover. Similar to Water Moon. Finally... yay!

This book features two main characters from completely different backgrounds, yet they share relatable stories. One bound by love and dealing with a toxic family whose worth is tied only to what she can provide with her magic. The other is being compelled by ancient magic to perform unimaginable tasks in a thankless job for centuries. This story is artfully written and beautifully crafted, allowing the slow build of a truly remarkable relationship. This book made me take a look at myself and swallow similar medicine. I am more than my job. I am more than my family's expectations. I can do what I want. Side note: I love the intimacy in this book, sexual and nonsexual. I would LOVE this to be a movie or show where they don't alter it. Please and Thank You.

Bitter Medicine that I didn't realize I needed
