At forty-two, Kathryn Monaco-Douglas never expected to become a widow. In an instant, her world turned upside down, leaving her to navigate the grief of losing her husband while raising three children alone. As she faced the overwhelming challenges of widowhood, she quickly learned she was not the only one walking this lonely path-many others were widowed even younger.

In this heartfelt and empowering book, Kathryn shares her own story of survival, as well as the stories of other young widows and widowers she's met and counselled along the way. She reveals the emotional complexities of grief, the secondary losses that come with losing a spouse, and the resilience required to keep going when life feels impossible.

More than just a personal account, this book is a resource for those lost in the fog of grief, offering insights, tools, and a sense of community for anyone experiencing the early loss of a spouse. With raw honesty and profound compassion, she addresses the societal blind spots that leave grievers feeling unsupported, and offers a voice to those who feel silenced by their pain.

Whether you're a widow, widower, or someone trying to support a loved one through loss, Because I Lived It provides wisdom, comfort, and hope. This book is a testament to the healing power of sharing our stories-and the strength that comes from finding our way through the darkness, together.

The raw honesty and connection is so relatable. A quick read and feeling of being less alone within my own grief. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

I stumbled on this gem of a book. I’ve been a widow for ten years and I honestly wished I had someone like Kathryn when I first started my bereavement, having to tell my story to strangers that first meeting had me on the edge of my seat. I could barely get the words out and then the 2nd year having to repeat my story again and now compounded with everybody else’s, it didn’t help at all. Kathryn not only only tells you the rawness of being a widow but also (for non widows/ widowers) help understand the little things that make a difference that feel supportive for those of us going through it. Her book made me cry, laugh and even think the things I shouldn’t have said or thought as a widow myself. She made me think even more and honestly inspired me to do something I’ve been wanting to do for years. Thank you. I’ll be listening to it again. I must read/listen not just for people on this road they never asked to be in but for those who want to understand and support us.

Inspired & awe struck
