For several years, time and circumstance have managed to separate Hallie Knight and her old friend Susan Trench. But when Susan disappears from her grandfather's seaside home on historic Topsail Island, it is Hallie whom Nicholas Trench calls for help. Wealthy, ill, and irascible, he refuses to believe that his beloved granddaughter and the heir to his fortune has been lost to him. He is certain that if anyone can find Susan, it will be her closest friend, the woman who knows her better than anyone else. When Hallie arrives from California, she finds the old man surrounded by an odd collection of friends and relatives, all of whom seem to know a little more than they're willing to tell about Susan Trench and her last days on Topsail. As the threads intertwine, Hallie must confront painful questions that build toward what may be a fearful answer.©1997 Phyllis A. Whitney (P)1997 Blackstone Audio, Inc. There is a lot of suspense in this story. The main one is what happened to Susan? Why her grandfather has summoned her best friend in college to help solve the mystery of her disappearance is interesting. (I do not think that one police officer appeared in this story) This is a book version of a future Lifetime movie. Readers peek into the lives of the rich and famous. Flying across the United States to help find a friend, retrieve a lost wife, and finding another lost wife who is just across the island. It is something to listen to while gardening or cleaning or painting your house.

Sweet story about rich people who lust, lie, cheat

This is a bit bland. Definitely gripping enough to keep you listening but it's not a very strong story and, I don't know, lacks a cutting edge, or sarcasm, or cynicism, something to make you laugh out loud.

Kinda run of the mill book

Some of Phyllis Whitney’s other mysteries are more compelling, but still worth a good read.

Worth the read

I tried to get through this but I just couldn’t waste any more of my time. This story was so boring. The narrator seemed embarrassed to be reading this drivel…every sentence sounded like she was reading a 1970s television commercial. No wonder it was free.

Even the narrator was bored with the story
