Twelve-year-old Sunny lives in Nigeria, but she was born American. Her features are African, but she has albinism. She's a terrific athlete but can't go out into the sun to play soccer. There seems to be no place where she fits in.

And then she discovers something amazing - she is a "free agent" with latent mystical power. Soon she's part of a quartet of students studying the visible and invisible, learning to change reality. But will it be enough to help them when they are asked to catch a career criminal well-versed in powerful juju?

Every decent fantasy series has rules for magic. Every good series has rules that make sense. Every great set of magic rules reveals a truth about life. This is a great series.

No spoilers here, but I adore Okorafor's concept for why some people have powerful magic and others do not, and I love the way that the system challenges a reader's assumptions about how traditional society values people. Any book that does that is worth much more than its ink.

I am going to be pushing this book into the hands of every fantasy fan I know.

I thought the book was good, but some of the rationale with the storyline did not make sense and the finale was a little weak. However, I enjoyed the book overall and look forward to the next one.
