Auckland, New Zealand, August 1943. After the body of an old WW1 soldier is found in the repair shed of the Auckland Train Station, the police call in security. The Viceregal Carriages are in the shed being spruced up for the wife of an American politician, and the police are worried that something has been planted on the carriages.

The U.S. Consulate asks Kate Hardy to impersonate the V.I.P. on an earlier train trip from Auckland to Wellington. She has been chosen for her height, but the woman she is to impersonate is even taller than she is and significantly older.

She takes the job as a way to continue her search for Major Harry Wilhelm, who has been posted to an unknown location by her influential father. But things don't go as planned, and the woman she is impersonating may not be the one in trouble. The Very Important Person in danger could be Kate. To save herself, she will once more have to work with Harry Wilhelm.

The track from Auckland to Wellington passes through miles of dense forest, tunnels through the ranges, and impressive viaducts. And everywhere, the threat of attack is on the travelers’ minds. Will it come from the land or from inside the train?
