Riley James lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her partner and two children. She was born and raised in north-west Tasmania and trained as a journalist before becoming an academic. Her second novel The Wreck (Allen & Unwin), a survivalist thriller/suspense/mystery, is coming out on 1 September 2026. Her first novel The Chilling (Allen & Unwin) was shortlisted for Best Debut Crime Fiction, the Ned Kelly Awards, in 2025, and longlisted for Best Adult Crime Fiction, the Davitt Awards, 2025. It is now available in German translation as Die Kälte (Hoffman und Campe Verlag).
